Because of the fact that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been accepted as a valid diagnosis for only the past decade, research on neurobiological mechanisms of PTSD has only recenty been initiated. Although few clinical studies have investigated neurobiological alteratons associated with PTSD, there has been a strong tradition of research on the effects of stress on animals in the laboratory. In this paper, it has been focused on the role of brain norepinephrine systems, the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis system, and other brain systems in the acute and chronic responses to stress.
