In this study, major depression prevalance was examined in a group of panic disorder patients (no:87). Comorbid major depression was found in 46 (53 %) of 87 patients with panic disorder. Compared to a subgroup of 46 patients with comorbid major depression and no major depression, the subgroup with comorbid major de.pression had an earlier onset of illness, more severe agoraphobia, more diagnoses of social phobia and more obsessive- compulsive symptoms. This subgroup had also more experienced panic and recurrent nocturnal panic attacks per month. The patients with comorbid major depression had diurnal variation of panic attacks including a tendency toward maximal symptom severity in the evening.
