Although the disease model is popular in many drug rehabilitation programs, psychodynamc apporaches are more widely accepted and valued in the treatment of drug abusers than in the treatment of alcoholic persons. In contrast to alcoholic individuals, polydrug abusers are more likely o use drugs as self medication and more likely to benefit from psychotherapeutic eforts to address their underlying symptomatology and character pathology. In this rewiev ego psychology and drug dependence were discussed.
