Complex Partial Seizures Presenting With Psychiatric Manifestations: A Case with Seizures of Panic Symptoms

30 percent of epileptic patients suffer from psychiatric problems and even 7 percent of these patients are admitted to psychiatric wards and receive medical treatment. In nonconvulsive seizures which can last from a day up to a week, mental symptoms can sometimes be the sole finding of the seizure and therefore epileptic disorder can be misdiagnosed. The symptoms of anxiety disorders and epilepsy are surprisingly similiar. Ictal complex partial seizures can usually be confused with panic attacks because of their similarities leading to an incorrect diagnosis. In this article, we aimed to illustrate a case experiencing complex partial seizures but which was diagnosed and treated as panic disorder over a year.
