In this study, 105 chronic schizophrenic patients at Bak ırköy State Hospital for Psychiatric and Neurologic Diseases were evaluated. The patient group consisted of 25 (24 %) females and 80 (76 %) males with a mean age of 50. The point prevalence of schizophrenia was 38 %. Comparisong the therapeutic regimens of the patients groups with and without depression according to HDS did not reveal statistical dillerence between the doses and tpes of antipsychotic drugs. Comparing the total points of parkinsonism and akathisia according to ESDS of the patient groups with and without depression did not reveal statistical difference. Also, parkinsonism subsclase of HDS and ESDS were not statistically correlated. The depression level according to HDS of the depressed patient group was significantly lower one month later. These results show the depressive symptoms of the patients may not be considered as postpsychotic, akinetic or pharmacologic depression, but these symptoms may be regarded as a part of schizophreniac syndrome. Conclusively, depressive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia can be differentiated using BPRS and the depression subscale of BPRS is as reliable as HDS to evaluate the depressive symptoms of schizophrenia.
