In this study it was aimed to evaluate the sociodemographic characteristics, perception of level of expressed emotion (EE), family functioning and the relation of these with relapse in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Brief psychiatric rating scale, level of expressed emotion scale (LEE) and family assessment device are used during the study. Briefly, in LEE's attitude toward illness subscale, the means of the groups of high and low EE's and the number of relapses were found to be statistically dillerent (the number of relapse were higher in high EE's group). Also, in the attitude toward illness subscale there was a statistical difference between the high and low EE's group, regarding the regular treatment point (the percentage of irregular treatment in high EE's group was higher than low EE's). In general in high EE's group the schizophrenic symptom level was also statistically higher than the other. In family functioning scale there was statistically difference between general functions subscale and the number of relapses (in the group with relapses at least two in the last two years, the family functions were worse). Moreover, a correlation is detected between the wor sening the family function and the number of hospitalization and psychiatric hospitalization time during lifetime (as the family functions worsens, the hospitalization duration and the number of hospitalization were increased).
