In this study, axis 1 disorders are investigated in the mothers of children with autistic disorder according to DSM-I V. To this end, structured diagnostic interviews carried out with the mothers of autistic children who were followed up at the "Psychoses and Pervasive Developmental Disorders Unit" in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department of Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. Psychiatric symptoms are also investigated using Symptom Check List-90-R. The most frequent axis I disorders seen in the mothers of autistic children were major depressive disorder (23 %), dysthymic disorder (16.7 %) and social phobia (16.7 %). The idea that these disorder might be dillerent mamfestation of a certain genetic predisposition seen in the family members of autistic individuals was discussed.
