A great number of genetic studies have been done recently about psychiatric disorders. These studies were at first psychiatric epidemiologic studies (family, twin and adoption studies) aimed to investigate the contribution of genetic factors to the etiology of psychiatric disorders and to determine the inheritance pattern of these disorders. Then with the completion of Numan Genome Project, an incredible number of cytogenetic and molecular genetic studies are being done trying to locate genes associated with psychiatric disorders on specific chromosomes. This article aims to point some basic techniques used in these molecular genetic studies and review some of the important linkage and association studies about particular psychiatric disorders.
