Under most circumstances lumbar puncture is carried out for the purpose of examining the cerebrospinal fluid, the physical, cytologic, chemical, serologic and bacteriologic compositions of the fluid are examined as part of the diagnosis of nervous system and somatic disease. Changes in the composition of the fluid may aid in establishing a diagnosis, confirm a suspected diagnosis, assist in estimating the prognosis and provide information essential to deciding on the most correct method of treatment.
