Abnormal monvements have long been suspected of occuring more frequently in schizophrenics with a preponderance of negative symptoms. This study examines whether there is any correlation among the negative symptoms of schizophrenia and drug related movement disorders, particularly tardive diskinesia (TD). Negative symptoms and movement disorders were rated in 51 schizophrenic inpatients by the scale for the assesment of negative syptoms (SANS) and Chouinard's extrapyramidal symptoms rating scale. Consequently, no correlation was found between total scores of SANS and TD, SANS and orofacial dyskinesia, SANS and lin ıb-truncal dyskinesia. Similarly, there were no statistical significant correlation between the subscale of SANS and TD. Lack of these correlations may be explained that TD and negative symptoms are relatively independent variables and they appear to have different etiologies.
