In this article, the concept of disphoric mania and its relation with mixed mania, and pure mana reviewed by the perspectives of American and European psychiatry. The clinical presentation and variability of its nature is mentioned. Possible biological etiologies and relation with substance use and alcohol intake, importance of family history, response to biological treatments, meaning of alternative treatments has beer discussed on the bases of contemporary literature
