For long, the investigators have been interested in gender differences in schizophrenia. Observed psychotic exacerbations and more hospitalizations at premenstruel phase, less relapses in pregnancy, more psychotic attacks in postpartıım and also in menaposal period and other clinical investigations about this subjects have pointed that gonadal steroids determined the types and characteristics of schizophrenia in women. The authors report hypoestrogenism in schizophrenia. On the other hand, some authors point that estrogens have protective and neuroleptic like effects in schizophrenia. If these effects are confirmed, estrogen preperats may be use in clinical practice as a main or a helper antipsychotic drug in the near future. In this article we summarized some literatures about protective effects of estrogens in schizophrenia.
