It is generally agreed that an association exists between alcohol dependency and depression. Various studies were performed on this subject with contradictory results. Some reports propose that depression develops secondary to alcohol dependency, while others opose such a relation and state that depression leads to alcohol dependency.
In order to evaluate this relation, we studied 120 alcoholic inpatients from 1995 through 1997. All patients were assessed by Hamilton, Zung and STAI anxiety scale at days 15 and 30 of admission. A mild depression was observed in 34.17 % of the inpatients that recovered without treatment, while 4.2 % of the patients had major depression in both of the assessments. This observation in alcoholics is, best explained by manifestations of abstinence, rather than a separate psychopathologic process or an entity developing secondary to alcohol dependency.
