The clinical interview for depression and the Hamilton rating scale were administered to a sample of 79 depressed inpatients who satisfied the DSM III-R criteria for major depression. Factor analysis yielded three clinically meaningful factors. The endogenous-neurotic dimension-and somatic-intrapsychic dimension emerged as bipolar factor and the bimodal distribution of patients scores on this factor indicated two distinct groups.
