172 inpatients referred to psychiatric consultation were investigated with respect to psychiatric diagnosis and the nature of the physical illness in a university hospital with 300 beds in six months. 23.3 % of the patients were diagnosed as adjustment disorder, 21.5 % of those were diagnosed as depressive disorder, 18.6 % of those were diagnosed as anxiety disorder, 12.8 % of those were diagnosed as somatoform disorder, and 5.8 % of those were diagnosed as delirium. Most common diagnosis in according to DSM-1V was major depressive disorder (13.4 %). Depressive disorders (43.7 %) in patients with cancer, adjustment disorders (53.3 %) in patients with entoxication and somatoform disorders (36.4 %) in patients who were being investigated with regard the physical illness were the most common diagnoses. There was a linear relationship between the severity and chronicity of the physical illness and the diagnoses of depression.
