The results of controlled research on family intervention programs in the treatment of schizophrenia suggest that intervention may reduce relapse and improve the outcome of schizophrenia. In the present study, the outcome of 14 chronic schizophrenic patients treated with maintenance antipsychotic nıedication plus psychodramatically orientated educational-supportive group therapy for their relatives (G1) compared to the outcome of 14 comparable patients treated with only maintenance antipsychotic treatment (G2). For this aim, all of the patients were in a follow up program for 1 year. The relapse rates didn't indicate any statistically significant difference between the two groups, but the relapse rate found to be lesser in the first group (the relapse rate of G1 20 %, the relapse rate of G2 35. %). These findings may indicate that psychodramatically orientated educationalsupportive group therapy for relatives might show positive effects on the course of chronic schizophrenia.
