Objective: Hospital statistics are one of the most important tools that help to estimate the epidemiological trends about a psychiatric disorder and design appropriate hospital programs. The purpose of this research was to determine the changes in the ratio of alcohol user to drug (except alcohol) user in a alcohol and drug treatment clinic in 1999 and 2002.
Method: Data were taken from the electronic database. The records of 2169 outpatients and 706 inpatients in 1999 and 2353 outpatients and 710 inpatients in 2002 were analyzed retrospectively.
Results: The ratio of outpatient drug users to alcohol users was 0.43 in 1999 and 0.54 in 2002. The ratio of inpatient drug users to alcohol users was 0.42 in 1999 and 0.63 in 2002. There was a significant increase in the ratio of inpatient or outpatient drug users (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Hospital statistics showed that there was a significant increase in the number of drug users. This has to be confirmed by epidemiological researches and has to be planned new approppriate hospital treatment programs for drug users.
