Compliance is defined as the extent to which a patient' s behaviour coincides with medical or health advice. The reported incidence of noncompliance with antipsychotic medication ranges froml 1 to 80%. Medication adherence problems increase hospitalisation, morbidity and mortality. Social consequences, professional problems and family troubles linked to hospitalisation lead to low quality of life for patients and high costs for society. Neurologic, endocrine and anticholinergic side effects are the first fact of treatment stop the most important factors of noncompliance. Poor insight, medication prescription complexity, economic problems, social support deficiency, some psychotic symptoms, comorbid addictive behaviour are although important to take under consideration.
Some effective actions interventions in order to improve compliance are described. Firstly, barriers must be removed. Information and communication with the patient psychoeducation, simplification of therapeutic plan, concultation planning and account of side effect are simple and effective actions.
This article reviews recent literature on the prevalance of and risk factors for medication noncompliance in patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. We search different factors influencing compliance and dicuss possibilities to enhance compliance among.
