The long term aim and prospect of the therapy and rehabilitation of chronic schizophrenic patients is to increase the quality of life. Thus, recent studies have mostly been focused on the development of scales to evaluate quality of life. The present clinical trial has been underteken to verify the contruct validity and reliability of the quality of life scale for schizophrenic patients described by Heinrichs et al (1984) for chronc schizophrenic patients in Turkey. Rated from a semistructured interview, 120 outpatients under neuroleptic treatment have been evaluated or intrapsychic foundations, interpersonal relations, instrumental roles and common objects and activities which have all been conceptually defined as the item categories of the scale. The intraclass correlations were statistically analyzed for categories in the determination of interrater agreement: interpersonal relations: .97; instrumental role: .96; intrapsychic foundations: .91 ; common objects&activities: .96; total score: .97 (p<0.000 I ). The relability for categories as well as the entire scale, were assessed by using Cronbach alpha relability coefficient: Interpersonal relations: .93; instrumental role: .97, intrapsychicv foundations: .94; common objects& activities: .98; total score: .98. In the construct validity assessment, it was analyzed by evaluating the intercorrelations among categories and total score (p=.000). For all categories and total score, quality of life of patients under clozapine were found to be significantly higher than the classical neuroleptic treated group (p<0.00I). Principle component factor analysis were perfarmed for all the patients ta assess the factore structure of the scale. Factor rotation was performed using the Varimax procedure. Factor loading greater than 0.6 was used as an acceptance threshold. Two factors with eigenvalue greater than 1.0 were extracted. As a result, the findings are positively indicative of the construct validity and reliability of the scale in chronic schizophrenic patients in Turkey.
