14 male, 18 female mood disorder patients with the mean age of 32.5 were giyen valproate as a mood stabilizator and antimanic because of insufficient response to lithium carbonate. Two patients were dropped out because of gastric irritation. Twenty-for of our patients had bipolar mood disorder (% 75), which also contained 10 patient with only manic episode.s, 3 had mixed mood disorder (% 9.5), 3 had mood disorder not otherwise specified (% 9.5), 1 had schizoaffective disorder (% 3) and 1 had alcohol ınduced mood disorder with manic features (% 3) according to DSM-IV criteria. Ten out of 32 patients had 2 episodes i'n a year (% 34.5). Eighteen patients had received valproate as they did not respond to lithium (% 58), 6 as they could not take lithium because of adverse effects (% 24) and 4 of them because of EEG pathology (% 14). Thirteen patients had received valproic acid (% 41) and 19 sodium valproate (% 59) just by chance. Valproate was combined with antipsychotics in 5 patients without lithium (% 17), and with lithium in the rest of the patients. Twenty percent of the patients (6) were also prescribed carbamazepine and did not also respond to it. Two of our patients valproate were stopped by other psychiatrists in their follow-up period.
