In this study we evaluated the relationship between post-stroke depression and disability due to this condition. Of the 31 patients, 14 were male and 17 female. The average age was 61.8. 9 patients were illiterate, 5 literate, 7 primary school level educated, 8 high school level educated and 2 university level educated. All the patients were evaluated regarding physical examination, activities of daily living (ADL) and depression at the first day of hospitalsation and one month later. ADL was rated according to the functional independence. Measure (FIM) and depression was evaluated according to the Zung and Hamilton tests. 18 patients (54 %) had depression. Zung and Hamilton tests were very well correlated. University level educated patients had less depression (p<0.05). In patients without depression FIM improvement was higher than patients with depression (p<0.01). As a result, depression seemed to be frequent in patients with stroke to delay the rehabilitation period. We suggest for the rehabilitation team to be aware of this problem.
