Serum cholesterol levels were suspected to have a role on suicide attempts. In this study serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels of suicide attempted patients were compared with healthy control group levels according to their psychiatric diagnosis and attempt methods. The study was performed on 50 patients applied to Medical Faculty of Selçuk University Emergency Service with suicide attempts between January 1996-December 1997. Serum levels of cholesterol and triglyceride were measured after the attempt within 12-24 h and after 12 h fastness period of control patients. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels of suicide patients were significantly lower than those of control group. There was no relation between serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels and psychiatric diagnosis. Cholesterol levels of serious suicide attempt patients were significantly lower, while there was no difference on triglyceride levels. This results Show that there may be a relation between suicide attempts and serum cholesterol levels and it may be assessed as a biological marker.
