Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) has largely been neglected in psychiatry until recently. It is characterized by preoccupation with an imagined deffect in one's appearence and may often lead compulsive rituals in a vain attempt to conceal the perceived defect. The chronic and persistent character of the illness results in significant social and functional impairment. Although it is classified in DSM-IV under the somatoform disorders, the classification and relationships of the disease to other psychiatric disorders are stili discussed. Available data on the phenomenology, age of onset, duration, response to the treatments and course of the illness suggest that BDD may be closely related to obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. In this article literature on BDD was reviewed.
