The present investigation examined the relationship between serum calcium levels and tardive dyskinesia in schizophrenic disorder. For this purpose; in this study, 51 inpatients (31 females, 20 males) who suffered from chronic schizophrenic disorder were evaluated using the Extrapyramidal symptom rating scale (Chouinard and Ros-Chouinard). Late-onset involuntary movements (tardive dyskinesia) have been divided into orofacial and limb-truncal dyskinesia. A significant correlation between limb-trunkal dyskinesia and decrease in serum calcium level were noted. These results have been discussed in terms of the role of calcium in neuronal dysfunction.
