25 patients (2 males and 23 females) diagnosed as dissociative identity disorder were followed up and psychotherapeutically treated with 39 (10-120) interviews on average for 4-24 months. They have a mean age of 24.0. Comorbid psychiatric diagnosis were borderline personality disorder in 8, conversion disorder in 14, somatisation in 9 of the patients. 24 of the patients reported childhood psychological travma. Traumas were sexual abuse in 18, physical abuse in 16, emotional abuse in 17, neglect in 11 and other types in 6 of the patients. Mean number of alter personalities was 12. 23 patients had been hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic. 8 patients dropped out for various reasons 11 out of the remaining 25 patients did not have a significant improvement, 8 of them improved clinically and 6 of them had total fusion of alter personalities.
