Diabetes mellitus (DM), also known as a psychosomatic disease, is a endocrinologic disorder in which psychiatric symptoms are observed frequently. The aim of our study was to compare with respect to psychiatric symptomatology, especially depressive smptoms and anxiety, and Alexithymia in metabolic controlled and un: controled patients acording to glycosylated hemoglobine (HbA1), an important indicator of long period glucose control. The sample consisted of 42 patients who had applied to Internal Medicine Department of Fırat University Medical Faculty between November 1998-March 1999. The patients were divided to two groups, metabolic controlled (n=22) and uncontrolled (n=20), according to HbAl. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale and SCL-90-R were used. Metabolic uncontrolled patients according to HbAl had higher scale scores. Finally, we suggest that psychiatric symptoms in clinical evaluation of DM should be take into consideration and so it may be obtained more success by this approach.
